TV and classic movies- Traditional sources...
Many years ago I became disabled due to a fluke of nature, my share of the theory that we do not make it through life without becoming disabled at some point. Most get to blame something and become rich due to the disability being cause by employment or accident. I was also getting confident and proficient in the 3rd career choice of my life at 34, no one had pulled a gun in a daring holdup robbery and it looked like I would be around for a while. It really was not fair. MS? Mental illness? Chris? Why did you move my stuff to the curb? New home? Arrrrrg! I have to live through this madness? Why not Cancer? TAKE ME QUICK! Well. if I have to live and I had to make a choice in life as I then realized I would be here for a while, I might as well enjoy it.
Entertainment would be a lot different in my new found single private life, alone and shattered. My TV or my computer... : What to choose. I could not afford both!!! Flashback: TV failed me again and brought evil creditors to my place, on my phone. Get rid of them both; Arrrrg, OK sorry about the window dear landlord....Damage deposit, yea go ahead, keep that... Poop. No, I do not need roommates or intimate acquaintances in my next place. Oh wait. Yea. The disability thing. I'm still alive? Why? Hey- wait- In Prince George we get local TV, Free. No mater what the future brought, I will be informed and tuned into the community. Internet however was limited by my computer's abilities and lifespan and was showing promise as a financial source. I had to learn to survive in what was becoming the most most violent community in Canada, possibly homeless at some point End flashback. Hello reality.
I did what most Canadian people do when faced with the insurmountable terror of worlds crashing down, with creditors pounding and the the thrills of mental illness amid the dangers of homelessness. I found the resources to continue. I lost the TV entertainment permanently, computer and phone temporally. I retreated for a month or 5 and dropped off the earth, living one step above the street, not quite homeless. Mom found me in the city and got me a phone installed once I found a home. For some reason it reassured her to know I was safe and how to phone me. My reassurance that the police would be knocking on her door if anything happened to me was not good enough anymore. Poor lady had just lost her husband so I complied and accepted the help. She would not pay for entertainment or shelter though. Just a restaurant meal every now and then. Yea- I do remember Dad. Poop. Thanks Mom :) TV or Internet.... Who would do such a fool thing as put me in charge of my life? Just wait, we will chat someday... TV or Internet?
The financial drain was too much just to watch one channel and I did not spend a lot of time at home, so it was wasted cash. It was a no-brainier. Hello, high speed Internet! Good bye, 56K modem. It came out just before the disability kicked in. It knew what I wanted before I did. I just had to discover it. Wait- there were 2 providers. I had learned in the past something knowing as "Customer Loyalty". It was taught to me by the patrons of the newly opened London Drugs #51 in Prince George where I worked at the time.
One supplier (Shaw Cable) had placed me in collections in the past. But it had also placed me in there because of TV. They provided Internet now, with the emerging high speed. I gave them another chance and stayed online with Shaw (Internet only) till the decade finished. TV was snowy and stayed off most of the time. Global TV BC and PGTV had shows on in the evenings that I enjoyed, life was good. In 2011 I signed up with Telus Optic (complete with Internet and TV) to find channel after channel with repeating content and uselsess shows 95% of the time. The Internet is comparable with no difference. Next post will be the TV I was able to enjoy (*FREE*) online!
